Citrin Foundation seeks to work with top scientists, researchers, and physicians globally to allow us to improve the management, diagnosis, and understanding of the scientific basis of citrin deficiency in order to improve/discover effective therapeutics.
Our funding does not rely on any external factors or targets, so those who are successful in their grant applications have a real shot at producing ground-breaking research. Furthermore, we are the bridge between clinicians and basic scientists. Rarely do these two entities meet but the best research tends to happen when they do.
The Foundation has already committed approximately USD3m for research projects and we plan to invest roughly USD30m over the next decade to tackle this condition. We fund projects for up to three years with grants ranging from USD300,000 to USD500,000 per project. We are currently offering funding opportunities for projects on citrin deficiency that meet the following criteria:
CITRIN FOUNDATION RESEARCH GRANT
Citrin Foundation aims to improve the management, diagnosis, and understanding of the scientific basis of citrin deficiency in order to improve/discover available therapies and ultimately to find effective therapeutics. We believe that having a global consortium of scientific researchers and clinicians collaborating in an open, non-competitive, and synergistic manner will allow us to eventually achieve these goals.
In terms of research, Citrin Foundation will continue to fund research projects that meet our research objectives (as mentioned below) to help us better diagnose and understand the scientific basis of citrin deficiency. We are also looking to expand the scope and number of research projects funded by our Foundation to accelerate the scientific development and understanding of this condition. Clinical, Translational, and Basic proposals will be considered, while Innovative and/or Interdisciplinary grants are encouraged. Our Foundation will also work with biotech and pharmaceutical, companies to develop potential therapeutics for this condition.
Research Objectives:
The aims and aspirations of Citrin Foundation culminate in the desire to ultimately discover a cure for the disease. Citrin Foundation strongly believes that a global consortium of scientific researchers and clinicians collaborating in an open, non-competitive and synergistic manner will eventually achieve this goal. Hence, the Scientific Strategy of the Foundation is to pursue through collaborative scientific research in specific areas, the following objectives:
- Identify patients with Citrin Deficiency (CD) worldwide
- Study the natural course of disease in large patient cohorts
- Improve the diagnosis of CD
- Understand the basic science and pathogenesis of the disease
- Support affected patients and their families by ameliorating the effects of CD
- Explore the benefit of existing therapies
- Develop new therapies

As part of expanding the scope of our research efforts, our Foundation is also looking to nurture and support the next generation of citrin deficiency researchers. As such, we are looking to sponsor outstanding PhD students and postdoctoral fellows who are passionate in metabolic research and have a desire to contribute to our understanding of citrin deficiency. Awarded postdoc fellows and Ph.D. students will be given the opportunity to work with Principal Investigators from Citrin Foundation’s Global Research Consortium, who are experts in the field of citrin deficiency and metabolic research. Awardees will be hosted within established and leading research institutes with access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Recipients will also be given the opportunity to attend expert talks given by prominent figures in the research community. These sessions and symposiums organized by the Foundation will provide a rare and valuable opportunity to network with leading experts across multiple fields of research.

Pre-clinical Research Models Available
Various preclinical cellular and animal models are available from Citrin Foundation to aid in your research on citrin deficiency on a case-by-case basis.
